Public trust in sacred institutions has eroded due to numerous cases of sexual abuse and misconduct by trusted leaders. Several religious institutions have faced accusations of sexual abuse in recent years, with the Catholic Church alone confronting allegations that date back centuries. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of child sexual abuse victims have been reported within just this one religious organization. This article examines the prevalence of sexual abuse allegations in three major religious organizations and other religious groups, utilizing relevant data and church abuse statistics.
- What Is the Frequency of Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church?
Religious groups are not immune to widespread sexual abuse, and offenders often exploit their trusted positions. Many respected religious leaders and esteemed congregation members have been accused of sexual abuse and exploitation within their institutions. Additionally, such individuals are often protected by the organizations they serve, allowing them to abuse their positions of power. A survey by Pew Research showed that “nine-in-ten U.S. adults — including 95% of Catholics — have heard about recent sexual abuse and misconduct by Catholic priests and bishops at least ‘a little’.”
In light of the increasing number of cases of sexual abuse in churches, numerous statistics highlight the prevalence of this issue. The Catholic Church has faced a wave of child sexual abuse allegations in recent years, spanning several decades. A report by the Illinois Attorney General in May 2023 disclosed that nearly 2,000 children were abused by over 450 adult Catholic clergymen in the state over a span of about 90 years. However, these statistics may not fully capture the true extent of the issue, as many abuse victims face stigma and other barriers to reporting.

Available data indicates that 80% of these victims were male, highlighting a concerning gender disparity in the abuse of minors by religious leaders.
The psychological effects on sexually abused children are profound. According to the US Department of Justice, those sexually abused by priests suffer from depression, learned helplessness, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and weakened faith. It was also found that childhood sexual abuse may have long-term psychological effects, and that abuse may go unreported for decades.
- Southern Baptist Church Statistics on Child Sexual Abuse
Statistical data on abuse within various religious organizations shows that numerous other institutions also deal with similar cases. In a bombshell investigation by a third-party group, investigators found that “700 victims, mostly children, were abused by church leaders and staff.” A report stated that “longtime members of the SBC Executive Committee worked to silence survivors and kill reform efforts.” Leaders at the Southern Baptist Church claimed for years that their method wouldn’t work in stopping predators, even though they kept a private list of abusive pastors and ministers. More than 700 offenders were listed, some of whom were still working in churches when the report was released.
The former president of the Southern Baptist Church himself was accused of sexual assault when an individual came forward. He indicated he “manipulated her into silence” by saying her accusations would damage the church’s reputation. Many of her allegations were corroborated by four other individuals. According to this report, church leaders failed to implement a comprehensive system for preventing and responding to abuse, and they “mishandled abuse cases and stonewalled victims for years.” The Southern Baptist Church, officially called the Southern Baptist Convention, is the world’s largest Christian Protestant denomination, and it’s not the only one embroiled in accusations of sexual assault. - Mormon Church Sexual Abuse Statistics
Another religious group, the Mormon Church, a sect of Restorationist Christianity also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been accused of sexual abuse by its leaders and members. Several instances of sexual misconduct and assault have been reported within the Mormon Church among children. A notable case involved a sexual abuse survivor who was recently granted a verdict of $2.28 billion against her perpetrator by a California jury. Notably, the lawsuit also implicated her mother and the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which both parents were active. The lawsuit states that the stepfather committed numerous acts of abuse against the victim at various events, meetings, and properties associated with the local Mormon Church. It is alleged that despite repeatedly informing church leaders and officials, including bishops, about the abuse, they failed to report it and instead used intimidation and shaming tactics to discourage her from speaking out.
In recent years, numerous personal accounts of sexual abuse have been described against the Mormon Church. In many cases, the abuse took place when the victims were very young, and the trauma can last a lifetime. Although the Mormon Church has guidelines for protecting members and reporting abuse, it acknowledges that abuse causes physical, emotional, or sexual harm to its members. In order to protect children from sexual abuse, many have urged the Mormon Church to do more and take more aggressive measures.
- Other Religious Organizations’ Sexual Abuse Statistics
The statistics reveal that many major religious organizations are also grappling with sexual abuse of minors. Researchers have found “patterns of sexual abuse in religious settings” and that this abuse is distinct from “other forms of manipulation in secular settings.” Because “perpetrators rarely conform to a single set of personality or other traits,” it can also be difficult to identify them.
This can be a massive problem. According to a grand jury report from 2018, church leaders in six Roman Catholic dioceses shielded hundreds of priests accused of abusing more than 1,000 young people in Pennsylvania. This report also found that the diocese’s main goal was not to help children but to avoid scandal. These victims were “identifiable from the church’s own records.”
Roman Catholics as a whole have shocking sexual abuse statistics. According to an investigation by the Associated Press, nearly 1,700 priests and other clergy members considered credibly accused of child sexual abuse are living under the radar with little to no oversight from religious authorities or law enforcement. The investigation highlighted how these religious leaders and clergy members (sexual offenders) seamlessly integrate with society and found examples of perpetrators working as teachers, living by playgrounds, and fostering children. As well as counseling survivors of sexual assault, many have allegedly committed dozens of crimes, including sexual assault and possessing child pornography.

Despite the alarming statistics regarding sexual abuse within religious organizations, this problem remains widespread and pervasive. It is clear that such abuse isn’t being addressed with sufficient gravity, and it continues to this day, far from being a problem of the past. The widespread existence of sexual abuse in religious environments is troubling, carrying significant and enduring effects for those who have been victimized. Therefore, it is crucial that church communities take decisive steps to address this issue and actively prevent instances of sexual abuse. It is the duty of these institutions to safeguard individuals from harm and establish preventive measures within their own structures. In cases where institutions fail to proactively make necessary changes, legal actions taken by victims can serve as external pressure for reform and hold perpetrators accountable.
